On the Southern outskirts of Basra, the Desert Rats, members of the Blackwatch Regiment of the 7th Armored brigade, man checkpoints leading into the city. They check people for weapons trying to get back into the city and direct refugees out. Since US soldiers were killed by an Iraqi suicide bomber at a checkpoint near Najaf, the atmosphere at all checkpoints has become much more tense. A young Iraqi girl is confronted with the tense and hostile realities of war as her relative is checked by British soldiers. The numbers of people fleeing Basra has also increased dramatically.
