Cottonwood groves tower high above the sandy shoreline south of Vermillion. The cottonwood has a firm place in Missouri River history, having provided such necessities as shelter for frontier settlers and fuel for the 19th century steamboat industry, along with fulfilling a multitude of uses for Indian tribes.
